With so many possible causes of sports injuries, it’s impossible to prevent all of them. However, there are several common underlying issues that can lead to injury, or at the very least raise the risk of potential injury. We try our best to educate our patient athletes to perform at their best, reduce as much risk as possible and prevent what we can.

Common Causes of Sports Injuries

We’ve had the pleasure of working with athletes of all skill levels in the practice, and over time, we’ve come to recognize four main causes of sports injuries.

1. Tired bodies. One study compared a group of athletes who got different amounts of sleep each night. A correlation was found between less sleep and higher risk of injury.

2. Poor nutrition. Getting the right nutrients in the right amounts can have a massive influence on performance and injury prevention. Proper nutrition affects recovery, nervous system function, muscle system function and body composition. We have extensive training and education in nutritional protocols so we make it a high priority in teaching our patients how to help themselves.

3. Muscle imbalances. If a muscle is weak, it is more likely to tear, more likely to be tight, and very likely to cause a compensation somewhere in the body. When evaluating the musculoskeletal system, checking for muscle imbalances or weaknesses is critical in not only correcting current injuries but preventing them from returning in the future.

4. Not seeking proper care with chiropractors. There has been a ton of research that shows how chiropractic can help athletes–in fact, many professional sports teams have their own chiropractors.

At an appointment, athletes can expect to discuss their health history with us so we can get a better understanding of the issue and perform any tests we see fit. They will also undergo a gentle adjustment. Some athletes remark that they feel an immediate improvement in regards to range of motion or pain reduction. Athletes may also receive advice on exercises and stretching.
